The newborns are an absolute love to watch over, with their actions and things they do. They often tend to surprise people around them by doing unexpected things, which often includes holding their heads up, which is without any support.
How do babies learn to hold their heads up?
The tiny tots gain the ability to hold their heads straight up at the very time when they build up the upper body and neck strength. Which explains the reason for importance of tummy time, as it helps in making the baby more mobile and active.
Having control over head and holding it up is all a natural process and often happens in the initial 6 months of an infants life.
When do the babies hold up their heads?
In the initial days, the newborns does not have much muscle strength, which explains the shaky or jerked movements they adhere to. But however, the infant tends to develop strength in their muscle and thus will become more coordinated.
Here is the gradual advancement an infant leads to, over a period of time-
1st month- By this time, the baby might be able to hold up their heads for a few seconds, but by the ending of first month, the frequency of holding their heads up will gradually increase. The one thing that should be done on your part is to support their shaky little head during their activities such as bathing or when you are holding them up.
2nd month- By this time, the baby could hold themselves up on their own, just for a few seconds. Although this head lift might be not very high, but still those couple of inches would be more than sufficient.
3rd month- By this time, the tummy time finally comes into play an it also pays off well. Because by this time most of those little ones would easily hold their heads up by a fer inches, by stretching their forearms. Also, they might even surprise you by turning their heads over on their sides, and even look around while you hold them.
4th month- By this time, they may hold their chest up while they support themselves on their forearms. The head lifting strength increases and they can now hold up their heads at about 90 degrees, and when you make them sit, they will easily be able to hold their heads up.
5th and 6th month- By this time, the baby will lift their head up for a longer period of time, and also would master some other physical activities as well.
HOW TO TEACH YOUR BABY HEAD CONTROL?
Although we cannot really teach an infant, but the one thing as a parent we can do is to motivate and encourage them, in a number of ways, which includes ample time for them to be on their tummy and even leave them on floors in order for them to roam around freely.
But make sure that you never force them.
Here are some ways that might help you in order to strengthen you baby's muscles which would help them in holding their heads up.
1. The tummy time.
This activity can be practised as early as at the age of one week, by laying the baby with their face down, just for a few minutes. Try to practise 3-4 such sessions for a few minutes daily, and once the baby is comfortable enough, increase the duration of their lay over.
2. Let them explore.
Try to make the baby more comfortable while lying on their stomach, make them play with things they like and help them indulge in all such activities that soothes their interest. Overall just keep them indulged.
3. Convert tummy time---> cuddling session.
Be the surface for your baby to lie down, which means make them lay on your stomach, which is a great way to bond over and have some pleasant time with you little one.
